GP Hindu Temple · Grande Prairie Mandir
Aug – Sep · Midnight celebration of Krishna's birth.

Janmashtami, also called Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight on the eighth day (ashtami) of the dark half of Bhadrapada, in August or September. Devotees fast until midnight, sing bhajans and rock the baby Krishna in a decorated cradle; in many places young people form human pyramids to break a pot of curd (dahi handi).
Also called: Krishna Janmashtami, Gokulashtami, Krishnashtami, Dahi Handi.
The community gathers for bhajan and kirtan, the midnight aarti welcoming Krishna's birth, and prasad of butter and sweets.
The Grande Prairie Hindu Association (GPHA), known locally as the GP Hindu Temple, GP Mandir, Grande Prairie Hindu Temple (Mandir) and Peace Temple (Peace Mandir), celebrates Janmashtami with Hindu families and friends of every background from Grande Prairie, Peace River, Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Everyone is welcome.
Dates for the next Janmashtami celebration are posted on the home page as soon as they are set. Members hear first, and can register before tickets open to everyone.
