GP Hindu Temple · Grande Prairie Mandir
January · Kites, til-gud and the sun's turn north.

Makar Sankranti marks the sun's move into Capricorn (Makar) and the start of its journey north, and is one of the few Hindu festivals that follows the solar calendar, so it falls on or about January 14 each year. It is a harvest festival, known as Uttarayan in Gujarat, Pongal in Tamil Nadu and Lohri in Punjab.
Also called: Sankranti, Uttarayan, Kite festival, Pongal, Lohri.
Families share til-gud (sesame and jaggery sweets) and the wish to speak sweetly all year, and kites, food and the warmth of the community make light of a northern Alberta January.
The Grande Prairie Hindu Association (GPHA), known locally as the GP Hindu Temple, GP Mandir, Grande Prairie Hindu Temple (Mandir) and Peace Temple (Peace Mandir), celebrates Makar Sankranti with Hindu families and friends of every background from Grande Prairie, Peace River, Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Everyone is welcome.
Dates for the next Makar Sankranti celebration are posted on the home page as soon as they are set. Members hear first, and can register before tickets open to everyone.
